In CrossFit, we often talk about mechanics, consistency, then intensity. A simple phrase that captures one of the most important principles of training. But behind that idea sits something even more foundational: standards. Whether it’s squatting below parallel, locking out your elbows, or hitting the same target on every wall ball, standards give structure to our movement. They keep training honest, measurable, and meaningful. At CrossFit Chemistry, we care deeply about helping people move well. Not just today, but for a lifetime. Standards are where that begins.
1. Standards Give Us a True Measure of Progress
One of the things that makes CrossFit so effective is that fitness is measurable, but only if the movements we’re measuring stay consistent.
Standards give us a datum. A fixed reference point. So, progress is real, not imagined.
If your squat depth changes week to week or your push-up range shortens when you’re tired, it’s hard to know whether you’re genuinely getting fitter or just moving differently. This is why we reinforce depth, extension, and range of motion. Not for perfectionism, but for accuracy. When your “Fran” time improves and your reps meet clear standards, that improvement means something.
2. Standards Often Reflect the Most Efficient Way to Move
CrossFit’s movement standards aren’t arbitrary. They represent the most effective and efficient ways the human body can move. Training through a full, stable range builds coordination, strength, and resilience. It develops muscles and joints in balance, reducing injury risk and improving performance everywhere. From lifting, to running, to everyday life.
At CrossFit Chemistry, we teach standards not to enforce a textbook rep, but to help you build a body that moves powerfully and safely for years to come. Good mechanics take time to develop, but they’re your gateway to long-term capability.
3. Standards Create a Target — Not a Barrier
Not everyone can meet every standard right now, and that’s completely normal. Standards are not a pass/fail test. For a lot of us, they are a target to aim for. For many beginners, the relevant question isn’t:
“Was that squat deep enough?”
It’s:
“Did I maintain control and keep my spine neutral throughout the rep?”
If the answer is yes, that’s excellent. The next question becomes:
“Can I safely go a little deeper while still maintaining that control?”
That’s the real purpose of standards:
- They show you what good movement looks like.
- They help you find your current best.
- They guide you toward your next level without rushing or forcing.
Standards aren’t about perfection; they’re about progression.
4. Standards Build Mental Discipline
There’s an important mental component too. Following standards rep after rep, even when you’re tired, develops focus, patience, and integrity. As we often say:
How we do anything is how we do everything.
Fighting for a clean rep isn’t just physical effort; it’s a mindset. It’s choosing quality over convenience, and that discipline carries into the rest of life.
5. Standards Prepare You for Competition. And Everything Else
We often encourage athletes to train the highest-quality version of a movement. Sometimes the most difficult version. That’s intentional. Competition standards (Open, local throw-downs, in-house comps) can shift from year to year. Sometimes they’re stricter, sometimes easier.
So instead of saying,
“That wasn’t the Open standard.”
We want you to think,
“The Open standard was easier — and that’s why I felt confident.”
When you train to a higher standard every day, competition becomes simpler. If the required range is shorter or the judging more lenient, you feel like you’ve been given an advantage, not a hurdle. We want you prepared for anything, and a strong foundation handles everything.
Competition standards can be arbitrary. Training standards shouldn’t be.
Bringing It All Together
At CrossFit Chemistry, we celebrate effort and improvement. But we also celebrate quality. Standards are what allow those things to work together.
- They tell us when we’re truly improving.
- They teach us how to move efficiently and safely.
- They prepare us for competition, life, and anything unexpected.
- And they give us a clear, practical target for long-term growth.
Next time a coach cues depth, lockout, or position, know that it’s not nitpicking; it’s pointing you toward your strongest, healthiest, most capable self.
Because your Fitness Formula for Life starts with standards that matter.
